Meet the Horses

Suyeta - Quarter Horse

Suyeta

Breed: Quarter Horse

Gender: Mare

Age: 12

Appearance: Tri Color Paint

# of Hands: 15.1

Suyeta has made her way back into our cavvy, where she started in 2003. We bought her as a 3 year old, used her for a couple years, then sold her to a close friend for her personal saddle horse. Every winter since then, Suyeta has spent her winters in our cavvy and is the "bell" mare in the herd. This season, she stayed for the summer and went to work for us again. She is steady and strong and though a bit headstrong, she will carry anyone all day long. A really good horse for us.

Kelly

Breed: Quarter Horse

Gender: Mare

Age: 8

Appearance: Sorrel

# of Hands: 15.1

What a sweet little horse Kelly is! Her disposition is quiet, yet attentive and she is light and handy both on the bit and on her feet. She's responsive when you ask for anything and is a great wrangle horse. Every lady who rode her this summer fell in love with her and a couple wondered how they could get her home. Another of the package deal of 4.

Matty

Breed: Quarter Horse

Gender: Mare

Age: 5

Appearance: Palomino

# of Hands: 16

Our friend Mark raised Matty out of one of his really good ranch mares and a Zan Par Bar stallion. She is just a colt, barely handled when we got her, so she's Mike's current project. Her real job will start in 2012, however she is already handling quite nicely and her disposition is quiet and steady. We expect she'll be in the guest string by next season. She's sure pretty!

Batman

Breed: Quarter Horse

Gender: Gelding

Age: 8

Appearance: Bay

# of Hands: 14.1

This little horse is quick as a cat and handy on his feet. Bobbi's latest project that came with the package of 4 head. Batman needed some work with learning that he could move his front feet without panicking. After a good, long summer and a lot of miles, he has turned into a really fun, challenging ride. He'll probably stay in the guide string for one more season.

Caine

Breed: Quarter Horse

Gender: Gelding

Age: 17

Appearance: Chestnut

# of Hands: 16.1

They don't come any better than Caine - we bought him as part of a package deal of 4 head, as the "go to, do everything" horse. Our childhood friend Mark did everything from roping, cattle work and cowboy mounted shooting on Caine, then he raised two of his children on this horse through 4-H, team penning and rodeo. Caine is rock solid and a prime addition to to cavvy.

Laramie Bill, aka "Jerry"

Breed: Foundation Quarter Horse

Gender: Gelding

Age: 20

Appearance: Bay

# of Hands: 15

This horse is one of the core members of our horse herd. Though he has mellowed somewhat over the years, don't let his age fool you. Laramie Bill still has a lot of "get up and go." We have done almost everything on him; worked cattle, wrangled horses, roped calves, packed loads, led pack strings, the list is long. There is not much you can't do on Laramie Bill, all you have to do is ask nicely.

Poncho

Breed: Registered Quarter Horse

Gender: Gelding

Age: 11

Appearance: Grulla

# of Hands: 14

New to the remuda in 2010, Poncho started off as a "project" horse for Bobbi and should move into the guest string next summer sometime. He was a little scared and defensive for the pre-season rides when he first arrived, but patience, time, and miles have all worked in his favor. He's a cute little horse of smaller stature, quick, yet very willing.

Mouse

Breed: Spanish Mustang cross

Gender: Gelding

Age: 15

Appearance: Grulla w/ dorsal & leg stripes

# of Hands: 15

Mouse came to us from a local rancher who had more horses than they needed. He has turned out to be a rare find as there are very few Spanish Mustang Registry horses in the United States. Mouse has a very willing, "workman-like" way about him, and a loose-jointed, smooth gait. This horse will go for miles and not quit. One of Bobbi's favorites.

Outlaw

Breed: Spanish Mustang cross

Gender: Gelding

Age: 9

Appearance: Mottled Steel Grey

# of Hands: 14

We raised Outlaw from a colt and he was a "pure" horse, meaning no one but Mike touched or handled him from the beginning of his horse/human interaction. There were no bad habits to try and undo, so his "canvas" was clean. Outlaw is very smart and was a bit obstinate early on, but he worked his way through it with Mike and is an outstanding saddle horse. Perfect feet, solid confirmation and the endurance and stamina that Spanish mustangs are famous for. Outlaw is Mike's personal saddle horse.

Molly

Breed: Morgan

Gender: Mare

Age: 17

Appearance: Bay

# of Hands: 15

Molly was well started as a youngster, then she raised colts for the better part of 10 years. She came to our place in 2009, with just light trail riding experience. She's been another "project horse" for Bobbi, though Mike has ridden her also. Lots of energy, willing to try, she just had to learn some respect and manners. A fantastic ride with enough spirit to challenge our better riders.

Grey Bear

Breed: Registered Paint (Yep!)

Gender: Gelding

Age: 15

Appearance: Mottled Light Grey

# of Hands: 14.5

This little horse has "been there, done that", from packing loads to the glaciers at 12,000 feet in the Wind River wilderness to tracking the wild horses of the Red Desert, and trailing cattle along the Green River. Gentle, kind and friendly, Grey Bear is usually a ladies' favorite.

Prairie Rose

Breed: Quarter Horse

Gender: Mare

Age: 10

Appearance: Red Roan

# of Hands: 15

Raised on the prairies of eastern Wyoming and colored like a rose, hence this gentle mare's name. Prairie Rose is strong and stable; nothing bothers her and in the saddle she will go anywhere, anytime. She is very "no nonsense", a real worker, all you have to do is ask her, but she won't volunteer!

Willow

Breed: Quarter Horse

Gender: Mare

Age: 10

Appearance: Sorrel w/flaxen mane & tail

# of Hands: 14 1/2

She's a pretty little thing, isn't she? Willow was five and we got her as part of a "two for one" deal; to get the good ol' gelding we wanted, the rancher said we had to take her too. She was pretty green and had pulled the wool over the eyes of the previous riders she had encountered, so there was a lot of negative "ju-ju" to be undone with her. Her confidence had been damaged, so Mike has patiently put a tremendous amount of time into rebuilding trust with her. Now she has become a really nice saddle horse, ready for experienced guests to ride. She is pretty and travels nicely, very quick or "handy" as we say out here, an athletic horse with good spirit and now, a willingness to please.

Kiowa

Breed: Registered Paint

Gender: Gelding

Age: 14

Appearance: Speckled roan

# of Hands: 16

A wonderful saddle horse that has a light feel and has been very well trained. He's responsive and has a wonderful gait. Came to us in 2004 with some soundness issues that have been addressed by chiropractic, acupuncture and natural balance hoof trimming. He's now sound, fit and back into the saddle horse cavvy full-time.

Lefty

Breed: Quarter Horse

Gender: Gelding

Age: 11

Appearance: Blue Roan

# of Hands: 15.1

Lefty is a really big-moving horse, smooth as glass and he can really cover ground quickly. He is now Mike's other personal saddle horse, second only to Outlaw. Most of the issues that were trained into him are modified now, and he and Mike have a pretty good thing going now. He'll keep getting lots of miles!

Ol' Paint

Breed: Paint / Arab cross

Gender: Gelding

Age: 13

Appearance: Tri-colored Paint

# of Hands: 15 1/2

A reliable, friendly and gentle horse, Ol' Paint is on "semi-permanent loan" to Blue Sky Sage. The flowing Arab gait really comes through in Ol' Paint and he can really cover ground when he's walking out. Loves attention, will help you eat your lunch if you aren't watching it!

Dusty

Breed: Mustang / Quarter Horse cross

Gender: Gelding

Age: 12

Appearance: Red Dun

# of Hands: 15 1/2

Another one of our friends' horses on "semi-permanent loan", Dusty's native bloodline shows in his common sense way of moving through rough country. Nothing bothers him, it's all "old hat" for this big horse. He seems to think he's seen it all! He's made a lot of progress here with Blue Sky Sage.

Little Buckaroo

Breed: Quarter Horse / Welsh cross

Gender: Gelding

Age: 13

Appearance: Buckskin

# of Hands: 13.1

The cutest little horse, with as big a heart as any horse we've ever had in the remuda. Anyone can ride Lil' Buck, as he takes care of novices, but if you ask him, he has plenty of go to satisfy more experienced riders. And, our "less tall" guests really love his shorter stature which makes it easier to get on!

Flash

Breed: Quarter Horse cross

Gender: Gelding

Age: 9

Appearance: Sorrel w/flaxen mane & tail

# of Hands: 13 1/2

His name says it all, Flash is kind of a fancy looker, with a lot of energy in a small package. Gentle, yet needs a firm, experienced rider to handle his energy and enthusiasm. Travels out great. He's a real fun ride, just a keen little horse.

Curley

Breed: Quarter Horse

Gender: Gelding

Age: 10

Appearance: Golden Palomino

# of Hands: 14 1/2

Curley is all Quarter Horse, classic looks and color, gentle yet responsive and can really move out when you ask him. Wonderful smooth gait that is a pleasure to ride all day. As friendly as they come; if you are lucky enough to draw Curley during the week, you'll never forget this good little horse.

Banner

Breed: Paint Quarter Horse

Gender: Gelding

Age: 15

Appearance: Red & White Paint

# of Hands: 16

Banner is headed into his third season with Blue Sky Sage in 2011 and boy, has he made a tremendous leap forward. He was a little snorty when he first arrived, but after a couple acupuncture treatments and proper hoof trimming, and having two years of good riders with nice hands at the helm, he has turned the corner to a wonderful ride.
