Meet the Horses

Laramie Bill

Breed: Foundation Quarter Horse

Gender: Gelding

Age: 18

Appearance: Bay

# of Hands: 15

This horse is one of the core members of our horse herd. Though he has mellowed somewhat over the years, don't let his age fool you. Laramie Bill still has a lot of "get up and go." We have done almost everything on him; worked cattle, wrangled horses, roped calves, packed loads, led pack strings, the list is long. There is not much you can't do on Laramie Bill, all you have to do is ask nicely. This photo is of Mike and Laramie Bill bringing calves to the branding fire at a local ranch.

Mouse

Breed: Spanish Mustang cross

Gender: Gelding

Age: 13

Appearance: Grulla w/ dorsal & leg stripes

# of Hands: 15

Mouse came to us from a local rancher who had more horses than they needed. He has turned out to be a rare find as there are very few Spanish Mustang Registry horses in the United States. Mouse has a very willing, "workman-like" way about him, and a loose-jointed, smooth gait. This horse will go for miles and not quit. One of Bobbi's favorites.

Outlaw

Breed: Spanish Mustang cross

Gender: Gelding

Age: 7

Appearance: Mottled Steel Grey

# of Hands: 14

We raised Outlaw from a colt and he was a "pure" horse, meaning no one but Mike touched or handled him from the beginning of his horse/human interaction. There were no bad habits to try and undo, so his "canvas" was clean. Outlaw is very smart and was a bit obstinate early on, but he worked his way through it with Mike and is an outstanding saddle horse. Perfect feet, solid confirmation and the endurance and stamina that Spanish mustangs are famous for. Outlaw is Mike's personal saddle horse.

Grey Bear

Breed: Registered Paint (Yep!)

Gender: Gelding

Age: 12

Appearance: Mottled Light Grey

# of Hands: 14.5

This little horse has "been there, done that", from packing loads to the glaciers at 12,000 feet in the Wind River wilderness to tracking the wild horses of the Red Desert, and trailing cattle along the Green River. Gentle, kind and friendly, Grey Bear is usually a ladies' favorite.

Prairie Rose

Breed: Quarter Horse

Gender: Mare

Age: 8

Appearance: Red Roan

# of Hands: 15

Raised on the prairies of eastern Wyoming and colored like a rose, hence this gentle mare's name. Prairie Rose is strong and stable; nothing bothers her and in the saddle she will go anywhere, anytime. She is very "no nonsense", a real worker, all you have to do is ask her, but she won't volunteer!

Willow

Breed: Quarter Horse

Gender: Mare

Age: 8

Appearance: Sorrel w/flaxen mane & tail

# of Hands: 14.5

She's a pretty little thing, isn't she? Willow was five and we got her as part of a "two for one" deal; to get the good ol' gelding we wanted, the rancher said we had to take her too. She was pretty green and had pulled the wool over the eyes of the previous riders she had encountered, so there was a lot of negative "ju-ju" to be undone with her. Her confidence had been damaged, so Mike has patiently put a tremendous amount of time into rebuilding trust with her. Now she has become a really nice saddle horse, ready for experienced guests to ride. She is pretty and travels nicely, very quick or "handy" as we say out here, an athletic horse with good spirit and now, a willingness to please.

Kiowa

Breed: Registered Paint

Gender: Gelding

Age: 11 years old

Appearance: Speckled roan

# of Hands: 16

A wonderful saddle horse that has a light feel and has been very well trained. He's responsive and has a wonderful gait. Came to us in 2004 with some soundness issues that have been addressed by chiropractic, acupuncture and natural balance hoof trimming. He's now sound, fit and ready to be back in action after two years of recovery.

Rooster

Breed: Quarter Horse

Gender: Gelding

Age: 19

Appearance: Sorrel

# of Hands: 15.5

This is one of the most favored horses we have in the remuda. Rooster gives 110% every ride and in the several years we have had him, he's covered thousands of miles. Gentle and easy to ride, plenty of spark if you ask him, just as much if you don't ask, he's not for novices. Rooster is semi-retired, so we use him only occasionally now to fill in.

Ol' Paint

Breed: Paint / Arab cross

Gender: Gelding

Age: 12

Appearance: Tri-colored Paint

# of Hands: 15.5

A reliable, friendly and gentle horse, Ol' Paint is on "semi-permanent loan" to Blue Sky Sage from a local woman who needs to ride her young horse more. The flowing Arab gait really comes through in Ol' Paint and he can really cover ground when he's walking out. Loves attention, will help you eat your lunch if you aren't watching it!

Dusty

Breed: Mustang / Quarter Horse cross

Gender: Gelding

Age: 11

Appearance: Red Dun

# of Hands: 15.5

Another one of our friends' horses on "semi-permanent loan", Dusty's native bloodline shows in his common sense way of moving through rough country. Nothing bothers him, it's all "old hat" for this big horse. He seems to think he's seen it all! Needs a little more experienced rider to direct his extra energy and curiosity.

Little Buckaroo

Breed: Quarter Horse / Welsh cross

Gender: Gelding

Age: 12

Appearance: Buckskin

# of Hands: 13.1

The cutest little horse, with as big a heart as any horse we've ever had in the remuda. Anyone can ride Lil' Buck, as he takes care of novices, but if you ask him, he has plenty of go to satisfy more experienced riders. And, our "less tall" guests really love his shorter stature which makes it easier to get on!

Flash

Breed: Quarter Horse cross

Gender: Gelding

Age: 8

Appearance: Sorrel w/flaxen mane & tail

# of Hands: 13.5

His name says it all, Flash is kind of a fancy looker, with a lot of energy in a small package. Gentle, yet needs a firm, experienced rider to handle his energy and enthusiasm. Travels out great. He's a real fun ride, just a keen little horse.

Dupont

Breed: Quarter Horse / Paint

Gender: Gelding

Age: 14

Appearance: Tri-colored Paint

# of Hands: 14

This little horse is as quick and handy as they come and really fun to ride. Dupont was a cow pony in the Southwest and his training really shows as he is light and quick when you ask him to do anything. He'll snort at you once in awhile on the ground to make sure you are paying attention and then he'll go right back to business. This horse is really fun to ride!

Curley

Breed: Quarter Horse

Gender: Gelding

Age: 9

Appearance: Golden Palomino

# of Hands: 14.5

Curley is all Quarter Horse, classic looks and color, gentle yet responsive and can really move out when you ask him. Wonderful smooth gait that is a pleasure to ride all day. As friendly as they come; if you are lucky enough to draw Curley during the week, you'll never forget this good little horse.

Buckwheat

Breed: Quarter Horse / Belgian cross

Gender: Gelding

Age: 5

Appearance: Light Buckskin

# of Hands: 16.2

Currently the largest horse in the remuda, Buckwheat is a well-mannered young horse that nearly anyone can ride. The Belgian draft personality comes out in him, so he's pretty laid back and nothing seems to excite him too much. Very trustworthy on the trail, willing to go anywhere you ask, and when he moves out, it's like you are riding in a big rocking chair!
